Preparation and Tools

Before beginning, check to see if your battery is truly dead. Test the tag by clicking the button - if the blue light at the corner of the tag does not flash, the battery likely needs replacement. A video of the below process can be found here.

What you will need:

• 1x CR2032 Battery
• 1/16" mini screwdriver (or an eyeglass/mini-pocket screwdriver). While an AutoSlide screwdriver is provided with the tags, it is often too large to gain proper leverage on the small casing screw.
• Flathead screwdriver (for prying apart casing)

Important Note for K9 Pet Tags: The K9 tag (identifiable by the small white inset button) is built more tightly than standard tags to maintain water resistance. Please be extremely careful when prying the frame open, as forcing it can break the plastic.

Step-by-Step Replacement Guide

1. Turn the tag over to locate the small screw on the back. Using the 1/16" mini screwdriver, carefully unscrew and remove it. Set the screw aside in a safe place so it doesn't get lost.
2. Locate the small rectangular slot at the bottom of the casing. Insert the wider flathead screwdriver into this slot and turn gently to start prying the case open. Crawl the screwdriver along the space of the groove to open the rest of the tag, taking care to not snap the frame.
3. Inside the tag, the battery and board will be visibly covered by a flexible, rubberized water-resistant lining. Take the board and lining out of the plastic casing, and peel the lining off the board to access the battery. Use the small screwdriver to gently push the old CR2032 battery out of its slot.
4. Take the new CR2032 battery and slide it into the slot. Pay close attention to the orientation: The flat side (which has the battery type text on it) must remain facing up (away from the board). The smaller, textured side should face down, touching the board.
5. Before reassembly, click the button on the tag board and ensure the corner LED flashes.
6. Make sure the board and rubber water-resistant lining are properly seated. Click the front face of the tag back into place. Reinsert the small screw into the back and tighten it down.
